Trinidad And Tobago Held Mexico For a Draw

Trinidad and Tobago vs MexicoLast placed Trinidad and Tobago hosted Mexico in the last World Cup qualifying game for South Africa 2010 in the hexagonal. The hosts were playing for nothing other than pride, while Mexico had already qualified for South Africa over the weekend, but were looking for the first place spot of the group over the United States. In the end a 2-2 draw was not enough for the Mexican side to take over the first place of the group.

It was Trindad and Tobago that had an opportunity to score first. In the 10th minute Hyden Tintoque came up against Carlos Salcido, and sent it to Kerry Baptiste who headed it near the post. But Guillermo Ochoa had quick reflexes and stopped the close range shot from going in.

The home team once more had the shot a minute later when Baptiste fired at close range, but Johnny Magallon was on the line and saved it off the line.

Batiste once again had an opportunity in the 18th minute outpacing Hector Moreno, and then Magallon, but his shot eventually went wide of the goal.

The in the 30th minute a penalty was given to Trinidad and Tobago for a clear hand ball from Mexican captain Gerardo Torrado. Ochoa and Torrado both jumped to clear out a corner kick, but as the ball came down Torrado hit it with his hand and gave away the penalty. Baptiste stepped up to the spot and put it near the low right post to give Trinidad and Tobago the 1-0 lead.

In the 43rd minute Miguel Sabah managed to get the ball into the area, and saved it after a few fumbles. He then passed to ‘Paco’ Palencia who passed to Carlos Vela, but the player was unable to combat with the goalkeeper to get his header in for one of Mexico’s chances during the first half.

In the 45th Andres Guardado took a shot from right outside the box, but Marvin Phillip was able to stop the ball.

For the beginning of the second half Palencia took a shot in the 50th minute, but it went wide.

Enrique Esqueda then scored a goal in the 56th minute to level the score. He took a shot from the right wing, and angled it over the Marvin Phillip for the equalizer.

Then in the 58th minute Vela took a shot from the left side of the box. Phillip barely got a touch on the ball, and it hit the underside of the cross bar and then rebounded just outside the line, and Esqueda failed with the followup for Mexico’s opportunity in going ahead.

It was Trinidad and Tobago who took the lead despite Mexico’s effort. In the 61st minute. Baptiste scored a header off a cross from Hughton Hector.

Carlos Salcido equalized in the 65th minute. Pablo Barrera crossed the ball into the area with Salcido waiting at the right post to head the ball past Phillips for the 2-2.

Mexico then almost went down by another goal in the 67th minute when Robert Primus tried to head in a goal. The ball hit the post, and the rebounded back on the player but stayed out of the net.

Barrera had an opportunity in the 73rd minute as he dribbled inside the box and took a shot with his right, but Phillips was able to get a hand on it and save from falling behind in the score line.

Edwards had an opportunity in the 89th minute, but his shot ended up going wide leaving the game tied at 2-2.
