Diego Forlan has finally signed a contract extension with Atletico Madrid that will keep him at the club until 2013. It had previously been reported that the deal was done and dusted, but the club’s official website state that the contract has only just been signed.
Despite the Atletico’s poor start to the season, which has seen coach Abel Resino replaced by Quique Sanchez Flores, Forlan expressed his delight at extending his deal and is confident that he can help the club to success.
“[I am] delighted with the renewal,” he enthused.
“Since I came to the club, I’ve always said that I’m very happy and that my hope was to play for many years with Atletico. I’m delighted with the treatment of the fans, my team-mates and the club in general. It’s a dream to be able to extend my contract for two more seasons.
“I love the city, my team-mates and Atletico Madrid. This is my family and I want to continue here for many years. I’m very confident in what this team can achieve in the future.
“I’m convinced that we can win trophies at this time. The club, my team-mates and myself will do everything we can to win as much as possible, although the most important thing at the moment is to get out of our current situation.
“Soon we will be in the place we deserve. I’m confident that the improvement [in our performances] will bring good results. Let no one doubt that we are the first to want to turn this situation around,” he concluded.
Forlan penned a four-year deal with los Colchoneros on signing from Villarreal in 2007. The Uruguayan has been prolific at the club, and won the Golden Shoe and the Pichichi after scoring an incredible 32 goals in 33 games last season.
