Vitesse made a bright start to Sunday’s game and picked up an early lead via Dalibor Stevanovic. However, they were dealt a huge blow minutes later when shot stopper Piet Velthuizen was forced to leave the pitch due to injury. Serbian hitman Marko Pantelic levelled the score for Ajax with a good header after fourteen minutes and Pantelic scored his second minutes later after a cross from Vurnon Anita.

Vitesse were denied a spot kick after Toby Alderweireld handled the ball minutes before the interval. Pantelic grabbed his hattrick in the second half before being substituted for Kennedy Bakircioglu, who found the net within minutes after being introduced. Young playmaker Ismail Aissati scored the 5-1 with twenty more minutes to go, when he beat the Vitesse shot stopper with a placed shot.
