Arsene Wenger: We Were Lucky To Beat Hull

Arsene Wenger English Premier League Football NewsArsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisted his side had been lucky to beat Hull City at the Emirates despite running out 3-0 winners.

Denilson opened the scoring for the Gunners yet the Tigers had an excellent chance to equalise when they were awarded a penalty which Manuel Almunia saved from Geovanni.

The home side then went on to complete the victory courtesy of goals by Eduardo and Abou Diaby and Wenger admitted the result was all that mattered after a difficult run of fixtures.

“I knew today would be a difficult game because we had two physical games against Liverpool and Burnley and for me the most important thing was to win,” he told ESPN after the game.

“We were a bit lucky because [Manuel] Almunia saved the penalty but after that I still think we deserved to win the game.”

The Frenchman also denied he had handed his players another half-time telling off but admitted they had improved after the break.

“I just warned them not to get nervous too much because the most difficult thing was to be 1-0 in front,” he added.

“[I told them] to continue to play, to put them more under pressure in their own half to create more chances, but slowly we took over and scored two more goals.”

Wenger also revealed that he had been saddened by the news that Manchester City had sacked manager Mark Hughes.

“I think it is very sad, every time a manager loses his job I am very sad because I know how much work and dedication is behind that and how much you suffer when you are in that situation,” explained the Arsenal boss.

“We all believe in patience on the technical side but on the other side it’s not always the same. But it is difficult for me to assess the situation of a club like Manchester City I just think that when Mark Hughes loses his job it is sad.”
