AFF Cup: Indonesia Trash Malaysia, Thailand Held by Laos

indonesiaIndonesia were the big winners on the opening day of AFF Cup action in Jakarta, as they thumped Malaysia 5-1.

Bryan Robson‘s Thailand meanwhile could only managed a 2-2 draw with Laos, the former rescued by a stoppage-time equaliser.

It was Indonesia though who grabbed the headlines with a convincing win in front of their home fans.

After falling behind to an 18th minute Norshahrul Idlan goal despite a strong start to the match, the hosts equalised and then took the lead before half-time.

Four minutes after conceding, Indonesia levelled matters courtesy of an Asraruddin Putra own goal before Christian Gonzales put them ahead with a slide-rule finish.

Having come close to extending their lead the home side did just that on 53 minutes, Muhammad Ridwan capitalising on a defensive error to make it 3-1.

Arif Suyono then made it four, Irfan Bachdim then completing the rout as Alfred Riedl’s side made the perfect start to the tournament.

Thailand were rather less convincing against an unfancied Laos, who came within seconds of securing a shock victory.

The underdogs punished Bryan Robson’s men for their profligacy in front of goal, taking a 54th minute lead courtesy of Konekham Inthammavong’s rather fortunate header, before Sarayoot Chaikamdee combined with Sutee Suksomkit to level the scores.

Substitute Kanlaya Sysomvang looked to have won the match with a wonderful long-range effort inside the last ten minutes before Sarayoot popped up in injury time to squeeze an important header home.
