The hopes of Borussia Dortmund defender Patrick Owomoyela to lift the Bundesliga trophy this season must end, after he was sentenced to a four-month absence from the field, because of a groin injury during a routine practice with his team.

The 31-year-old player, who last played for the German national team against the United States in 2006 with a record of 11 international matches, ironically only made six appearances this season.

Owomoyela actually just returned from a long injury this season, after he underwent an Achilles surgery.

Although rarely played for Dortmund because of injury, Owomoyela is still trusted by the management and had signed a new contract which keeps him for one more season.

Dortmund will travel to Borussia Moenchengladbach in the game and will win the title if second-placed Bayer Leverkusen draws or defeated by Hoffenheim. The Bundesliga will end on 14 May. (AFP)
