Yoon Sung-Hyo: Suwon Bluewings Should Be The Best in Asia Again

Suwon Bluewings coach Yoon Sung-Hyo says its time the two-time Asian champions returned to the summit of football on the continent ahead of Wednesday’s AFC Champions League semi-final against Al Sadd.

Yoon, who was part of Suwon’s coaching staff when they won back-to-back continental titles in 2001 and 2002, told Fifa.com it’s time the Bluewings reclaimed their place as Asia’s best.

“It is too long since we last won a continental title,” Yoon said. “It is time that we returned to the top in Asia and I believe our side have sufficient qualities to contend with our rivals and win.”

The four-time K-League champions, who lost the Korean FA Cup final 1-0 to Seongnam Ilhwa on Saturday, are confident ahead of Wednesday’s home clash with the Qatari club.

However, Yoon admitted Al Sadd wouldn’t be taken lightly, despite clinching a semi-final spot with the aid of the Asian Football Confederation’s decision to award them a 3-0 quarter-final first-leg win over Sepahan after the Iranians fielded an ineligible player.

“Al Sadd are a strong opponent and they won the Asian Club Championship in 1989,” Yoon said.

“They also have an excellent coach and group of players but still, we have a lot of Asian experience and we can overcome them as long as we keep our cool and focus on our own play.”

Fellow K-League club Jeonbuk Motors take on Al Ittihad in the other semi-final on Wednesday and Yoon he wasn’t afraid of the prospect of an all-Korean decider.

“If we meet Jeonbuk in the final and win, it will definitely be an interesting scenario,” Yoon said.

The Bluewings defeated Japanese club Jubilo Iwata in 2001′s decider, before knocking off Korean outfit Anyang LG Cheetahs in 2002′s final.

“The chances are pretty much good this time around. Having achieved this nine years ago, I believe our experiences will stand us in good stead throughout the remainder of the campaign,” Yoon said.
