Landon Donovan Not Joining U.S. National Team Against France
One day after his team advanced to MLS Cup, LA Galaxy forward Landon Donovan withdrew from the U.S. national team roster for its upcoming friendly against France on Nov. 11.
“The plan was to have Landon come in for the match against France and then return to the LA Galaxy in preparation for MLS Cup, but after further discussion Landon expressed his desire to stay in Los Angeles,” said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
Donovan, who scored a goal in the Galaxy’s 3-1 Western Conference final victory over Real Salt Lake on Sunday, was scheduled to fly to Paris on Monday, then fly back to Los Angeles after Friday’s match against France in preparation for MLS Cup on Nov. 20.
“While my preference was to have Landon with us for this important match, I respect his decision,” Klinsmann added.
Donovan had only recently returned to the Galaxy after a quad injury kept him out of three MLS matches in October. He also missed the United States’ October friendlies against Honduras and Ecuador.
The U.S. announced that no replacement will be added to the roster at this time. Following the France match, the team will face Slovenia on Nov. 15.
