Warnock: Redknapp is the Perfect Manager for England
Neil Warnock believes Harry Redknapp is the ideal candidate to succeed Fabio Capello as England boss when the Italian steps down following Euro 2012.
And QPR boss Warnock believes the FA missed a trick when they failed to axe Capello following England’s dismal World Cup 2010 campaign, which ended with a second-round exit against Germany.
“They should have let Capello go then – and not just for financial reasons. It was a wonderful chance to make a clean break and bring in someone like Harry,” Warnock told the Sun. “They should have also taken the bull by the horns and embarked on a two-year cycle of experimentation where the results were not the paramount concern.
“It’s not that we win anything anyway. So what would we be losing out on? We should have been bold and brave enough to blood good, up-and-coming players and said: ‘To hell with the results’. Only like this will we have a chance to develop a team capable of taking on and beating the best. I’m sure the country would have united behind that.”
Tottenham Hotspur chief Redknapp is the bookmakers’ favourite to inherit the role from Capello – but he has recently undergone heart surgery, and the England job is nothing if not stressful. However, Warnock believes coaching the Three Lions could be just the tonic for Redknapp.
“Yes, I know he has had his heart scare but the operation seems to have been quite routine while his recovery is extremely manageable,” Warnock said. “In fact, the England job would be perfect for him. He could pace himself and take time off when required. Except, of course, he won’t!”
