Iker Casillas Delighted to become Spain’s Most capped Player

Spain international and also Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is very happy to become Spain’s most capped player after he played his 127th game against Costa Rica on Tuesday, in an international friendly match that ended in a 2-2 draw.

The game which was played in San Jose made Casillas surpass former Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao player Andoni Zubizarreta, who played 1256 times for Spain from 1985 until 1998.

Casillas has played over 580 matches for Madrid in all official competitions and is currently sixth in the club’s list of most appearances.

Casillas made his debut for Spain in a 1-1 draw against Sweden on June 3, 2000 and won Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, captaining the team on both occasions.

“When I started out playing as a kid I never thought I would reach such figures but now that I have, I’m obviously very happy,” said the 30-year-old on Uefa.com.

“Every time I join up with the national team I do so as if it were my last. The only thing I have clear in my mind is that it has been a real pleasure to play for Spain for the past 11 years.”
