Phil Jones Believes in Superstitions

Eric Cantona and Pual Ince had a specific ‘ritual’ that is believed to bring success. Phil Jones also has a belief in superstition.

Cantona has always played with a t-shirt collar upwards. Ince has always been the last person out of the alley. After the match, Ince will be the last player who opens his costume.

Jones has another habit. He comes to the stadium first, and refuses to take the elevator if the game takes place overseas.

He also does a special ‘ritual’ after the match. That is that he will always takes off his left socks first if the match takes place at Old Trafford. If the match was an away matc, Jones will always take off his right sock first.

When the Red Devils traveled to Swansea, for example, his colleagues watched how Jones took off his right sock first.

“Next week Manchester United will face Benfica. After the game, I’ll take off the left sock first,” he said.

Jones acknowledged that such a ritual is like something stupid. But he can not avoid, because it has become a habit.

Jones does not know whether this ritual fives success He also does not know since when. To be sure, since his move from Blackburn to Manchester United, his performance continues to improve.

“I also do not like to step over the white line of the field. If I had to do it, I’ll step with my left foot at home games, and right foot if  play away matches,” said Jones.

Pre-game ritual is not only done in the locker room, but could be done anywhere. One of them at the hotel.

“If you enter the hotel, there will always be two towels hanging below,” said Jones.

“When the game against Spain, I hung the towels left because we play in front of our public,” he continued.

Before Jones told all this to reporters, none of his colleagues at Manchester United and England noticed his ‘ritual’.

“Now all this is no longer a secret. I did not want to keep it a secret,” said Jones.

regarding the elevator when abroad, Jones called it not as a ritual, but a phobia. While on vacation to Greece and stay at a hotel, he was stuck in an elevator for a few hours.

“I have tremendous fear. I think I suffer from claustrophobia, or fear of being in a room alone,” recalls Jones.
