Paul Scholes’ Return Boosts Manchester United’s Spirit
We all know that Paul Scholes had announced his retirement from professional football this season. But did he really wanted to stop playing professional football? Well the question was recently answered as Scholes finally postponed his retirement. He made a comeback to play again with Manchester United.
This decision was not only beneficial for Scholes, but also for United. Scholes comeback undoubtedly had managed to boost the spirit of United players, who was having a difficult moment after experiencing to consecutive defeats in the English Premier League. With Scholes’ return, United managed to get an important 3-2 win in the derby against Manchester City in the FA Cup third round yesterday.
In the very tight (as usual) derby game, Scholes came on in the 59th minute. He replaced Nani’s place when United already were in front by 3 goals to nill. Although after Scholes entered the field, United conceded two goals, but his presence alone gave a new color for United’s midfield area. The creativity and strength of United midfield began to be seen again, this was obviously missing when Scholes decided to sop playing.
What is worth noticing is that despite not having played a competitive match for quite a while, Scholes was still able to show a very good performance. Once receiving the ball first time from a pass made by Michael Carrick, Schole immediately showed his skill in handling the ball. He also made a shot despite failing to score a goal.
“He kept himself fit in order to remain in good stamina and form of play. I always felt that he still deserves to play a season again,” said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Scholes himself regretted his decision to retire at the end of the 2010-2011 season and felt that the retirement decision was made to soon. Scholes believed that he still could go on playing, and this was proven that after retirement, Scholes really missed playing again.
“Ever since I stopped playing, I really missed performing. I’m happy the manager felt that I could contribute to bring success back,” said Scholes.
Not only Fergie and the fans who are pleased with Schole’s comeback, other United players are also very pleased that Scholes is willing to play again with them. Manchester United really still needs the experience that scholes have. Besides that he is an influence for other players and is able to boosts other players’ confidence when playing with him. But, according to Wayne Rooney, the other players did not know if Scholes would play in the derby match Manchester City.
“It’s very surprising. We did not know that Scholes will play again until we gathered in the locker room. However, he is a great player,” said Rooney.
This comeback is really relieving considering the difficult situation that United is currently facing after the two surprising defeats. United really could use any help that they could get, especially from experienced players like Scholes.
Rooney hopes that the return of Paul Scholes to Old Trafford will continue to pump up the spirit of the other United players and end the crisis in midfield.
