Liverpool ended their Premier League losing streak as Steven Gerrard struck a hat-trick in a comfortable 3-0 victory over city rivals Everton at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The Reds opened the scoring just past the 30-minute mark, as Gerrard placed the ball over Tim Howard in the Everton goal from the edge of the area following a drive into the box from Martin Kelly.

Their captain got the second five minutes after the restart, hammering in after good work down the right by Luis Suarez, and he secured his hat-trick in injury time to become the first player to score three in a Merseyside derby at Anfield in over 76 years.

Liverpool made four changes from the weekend defeat against Sunderland, with Sebastian Coates being replaced by Jamie Carragher in defence, Gerrard coming in for Charlie Adam, Dirk Kuyt dropping out for Stewart Downing and Andy Carroll starting in favour of Craig Bellamy.

With the upcoming FA Cup tie against Sunderland clearly in the back of David Moyes’ mind, Everton made six changes from the team which beat Tottenham. Nikica Jelavic, Tim Cahill, Phil Neville, Leon Osman, Royston Drenthe and Jonny Heitinga all took a place on the bench, with Denis Stracqualursi, Victor Anichebe, Tony Hibbert, Jack Rodwell, Steven Pienaar and Phil Jagielka taking their respective places.

It didn’t take long for the hosts to assert some serious pressure on their visitors, as first Gerrard, and then Jordan Henderson went close inside the first seven minutes.

Gerrard burst into the penalty area before looking to slide the ball into the bottom far corner, but Howard got his left hand to it, and just when Henderson looked to smash the ball goalward, Rodwell threw himself in the way of the shot.

The match continued at break-neck speed as Everton went straight down the other end and almost opened the scoring themselves. Leighton Baines marched down the left, beating Kelly before playing the ball through Henderson’s legs but, after cutting the ball back to Pienaar, the South African blasted over.

It was fairly clear that both teams were insistent on getting the ball down and playing, but it was the link-up play between Carroll and Suarez that made the next chance. The big striker did well to flick on a long ball to the Uruguayan with his head, but Howard saved his left-footed shot well.

Although the flow of chances slowed a little, after much back and forth, Liverpool took the lead through their captain just past the half-hour mark.

Kelly found space on the right and drilled a shot at Howard before attempting to pounce on the rebound, but the ball eventually came back to Gerrard on the edge of the area and he casually lofted the ball over the helpless Howard and into the back of the net.

Two minutes later Kelly was at it again as he got away from his marker down the left, getting on the end of a pass into the area, but his clipped effort went just wide of the far post. Stracqualursi then went close at the other end with a well-timed header, but Pepe Reina dealt with it as the half fizzled out with Liverpool 1-0 up.

However, it didn’t take long after the break for Liverpool to get their second, and it was Gerrard once again. Suarez did well down the right, getting down to the goal line, beating Sylvain Distin and fortuitously over-running the ball into Gerrard’s path, who smashed into the roof of the net.

The same almost happened again just two minutes later on the other side of the goal as Suarez this time cut the ball back for Carroll, but the England international put his effort wide of the far post.

With half-an-hour left to find a way back into the match, Rodwell almost gave Everton a lifeline. Baines charged down the left and played a clever pass into the area for the midfielder, but his side-footed effort was stopped before it got to the goal by Jose Enrique, who slid in and cleared at the last second.

Liverpool visibly took their foot off the proverbial pedal, clearly suspecting they had already done enough for the three points, but Everton weren’t giving up as Moyes threw on Royston Drenthe, Nikica Jelavic and Leon Osman.

The changes created more urgency in attack for the visitors, but they were still struggling to create chances, with Rodwell’s blocked effort from range the closest they came to getting a goal back, before Liverpool soon got a third.

Gerrard broke through the centre, charging down on the Everton penalty area before passing to Suarez to his left, and receiving the ball back from the Uruguayan to knock into an empty net, securing the win.

Moyes has been linked with Chelsea and Tottenham – should, as expected, Harry Redknapp take over at England – while Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has praised his compatriot for the work he has done at Goodison Park.

Moyes will mark his 10th anniversary at the club on Wednesday still looking for his first trophy and he freely admits he is a hugely ambitious man.

Kenwright is too, but knows the only way to match the ambition of his manager is to find new owners who can bring in much-needed finance for him to be able to compete more regularly with the top-six in the Premier League.

Asked whether he feared losing Moyes to a wealthier rival, Kenwright said: “Not at all. Never. Why? What do I think is the biggest club in the world? Everton.

“Why wouldn’t people want him? But he is our manager and I do believe he is our manager because he wants to be our manager and he gets what he can and what he wants out of this club.

“I think that is important to him. He is ambitious. I am hugely ambitious but I have got to be realistic and that is why I have to ask myself whether I can be the chairman for much longer. It is a huge club and I have to find the investment to take it forward.

“We love nights like the ones against Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham (all recently beaten at Goodison Park) but we live in a game dominated by money. I know this club is revered throughout football for the way we try to do it but it is a huge job and it gets more and more difficult.

“The one thing he (Moyes) does know is he gets every single brass farthing available and he does know no-one takes any money out of this club. But at the end of the day I have to find a new owner.”

Of his decade-long relationship with Moyes, Kenwright said there had been very few disagreements. “It has not been a love-in. Both of us are keen to say that but it has been a friendship,” he said.

“It has been 10 years of absolute friendship. We’ve had maybe two what you could call rows but they would last five minutes, words rather than rows maybe.”

However, Kenwright felt the manager had brought something back to Everton which money could not buy.

“The one thing he has done for this club is he has made us all believe again and 10 years ago we had lost some of our belief,” he said. – soccernet

Everton‘s Tim Cahill urges the squad to maintain their focus after their victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last week.

The Australian midfielder asks his colleagues not too look too far, and focus on every game.

“We must focus on every game in the future. We did not play with the best performance against Wolves, but as long as we score points in the next few games, it does not matter,” said Cahill.

“But we have to do it individually. I do not think we could see three or four games in the future, what we have to do is focus on the closest match. I know this is frustrating for fans, but for players, all we want is to win games. ”

“We must continue to fight and ensure that we always are courageous to face difficulties, regardless of its form. We have a small squad and we do not have much choice. These players play every week and nothing has changed. We will continue to fight until the end. “

The reason, according to Baines, that it is taboo.

Baines made Everton fans pleased with the statement. Although eager to move to the next level and join a larger team, Baines confirmed that he will not want to move to Liverpool.

“I was made ??aware of this, but as far as I know, it’s not an option. When you come from Liverpool, it is between Liverpool or Everton, one and not the other,” said Baines, according to The Mirror.

Even so Baines did not dismiss that his family are fanatical Liverpool fans. “My family never stopped to support the Reds, though I joined Everton. They still wanted Liverpool to win. The only one who crossed (supports Everton) was only my father, and he must strive for it,” he admits.

The reason is that Fergie was made worried for 83 minutes of the match.

Luckily, the Red Devils have Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez who scored ??the winning goal in the 83rd minute. Fergie did not hesitate to praise Hernandez as the hero of his team’s victory .

“We never doubted Hernandez’s capability. He’s a hard worker. He comes first and goes home last at the training session,” said Fergie.

Not only Hernandez, Fergie also gave special credit to all players who have fought for three points.

“The players look amazing in this game (against Everton). At the first half we found difficulty. However, the boys could get the winning goal at the end of the game,” Fergie added.

But what makes it even worse is that influential midfielder, Mikel Arteta, was injured and is likely to be sidelined for the rest of this season.

Arteta was injured after colliding with Sebastian Larsson. He also must be replaced before the game ended.

Everton refused to panic in dealing with this situation, but also can not ensure the condition of Arteta.

“I still do not know, I just saw him leave the field,” said coach David Moye.

“It seems that he suffered a hamstring injury, but I have not spoken with the medical team to listen to their opinions,” he said.

“It is a major blow for us because we need creativity and I know if we can not play him, we will find it hard to play our game.”

The Blues once again failed to gain victory and was only able to draw 1-1 against Everton in the Premier League.

Chelsea led first through a penalty scored by Didier Drogba at the end of the first half, the Blues were forced to share points after a header from Jermaine Beckford passed through goalkeeper Petr Cech. This is the fourth consecutive time Chelsea failed to gain a victory.

With the addition of a point, Chelesa failed to overtake Manchester United from the top of the standings. With a collection of 30 points, Chelsea have to drop to third position, following Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Fulham. The Gunners temporarily lead the standings with 32 points or one point ahead of United who have to delay their match against Blackpool.
