The midfielder did not have the best of campaigns last season, as despite being part of AC Milan’s Serie A-winning squad in 2010-11, he struggled to make much of an impact under coach Massimiliano Allegri and experienced a dip in form for Italy as well.

However, his move to Juventus last summer proved to be vital tonic in his career, with Bianconeri coach Antonio Conte choosing to build his team around the 32-year-old, and Pirlo believes the switch has put him back in the same breath as other celebrated individuals.

“It’s a title well deserved and one that we wanted from the beginning,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia. “I think that we earned it on the pitch.

“I wanted to win and I did. I left Milan because I needed more motivation in my career, so I chose Juve and bought into their project.

“I believed I was number one and I believe I have demonstrated it again this season.”

When quizzed on who would succeed him in his playmaking duties one day, Pirlo added: “I hope to continue playing for many more years because I am enjoying myself and I still really want [to win more trophies].”

The triumph coincides with a number of firsts, as this has been their debut season at the new Juventus Stadium, while coach Conte has never previously taken charge of a Serie A club for a full campaign.

The Nerazzurri arrive in Turin in dire need of a victory if they are to have any chance of securing the top three finish they require to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“They are playing well, they’re in the Coppa Italia final, but the Derby d’Italia always carries its own weight.

“Then there’s the importance of a big game and the home points available.

“Inter are looking to bounce back and get things back on track yet again. We want to win; we’re going to Turin to win the game and it won’t be easy.

“But I think Inter will play with a little less pressure on them.”

Stankovic admitted, though, that he is feeling the strain on a personal level at the moment because he has failed to find the net in Serie A so far this season and is therefore hoping that he can break his duck in arguably the biggest game in Italian football.

“When I was a kid, I was told that great games are meant for great players,” he revealed. “So, we’ll see …

“It would certainly be nice because I’ve never ended a season without scoring a single goal.”

Juventus

The Turin side are keen to add some more depth to their squad in the summer transfer window, and the 19-year-old Verratti will be their first signing as Juventus look to acquire young talent.

Juventus see Verratti, who has been capped at Under-21 level for Italy, as the long-term replacement for Pirlo, and are hopeful that the playmaker will make the next step in his development under the tutelage of the Italy international.

Verratti is a product of the Pescara youth academy and made his official first team debut at the tender age of 16. The midfielder has since developed into a key player at the Serie B side, and has now earned himself a transfer to the Bianconeri this summer.

The centre-back was questioned by Puglia police on Friday about his role in the betting scandal, but Bonucci has made it clear that he was not aware of any attempts to manipulate games during his spell at Bari.
